Trekkers on the kurinji hillsTrekking the kurinji hills

A group of environmental activists and enthusiasts led by G. Rajkumar (Save Kurinji Campaign Council) and a few photographers undertook a journey through the forests near Koviloor on August 12, 13 and 14 in search of kurinji.

Besides seeing kurinji in its undisturbed natural habit, the trek was also intended to document the gregarious flowering. However, the trekkers found few undisturbed locations.

brochureDanielle M’Garvey from Scotland, who was until recently a support worker with the Queens Cross Volunteer Service in the United Kingdom was among the trekkers. “It’s beautiful. I would have missed it (if I had not joined the group),” she said.

The Kerala unit of the Youth Hostels Association of India organised a trek cum tent camp on the Kurinji hills from September  8 to 17. Besides visit to the kurinji hills, camping at Cliff Valley peak and treks to a tea garden and tribal settlement were part of the programme. Cliff valley is the highest camping site in South India.
