Restrictions on tourists visiting Munnar during kurinji season
MUNNAR: The Forest and Revenue Departments have imposed
restrictions on visitors to Munnar town and nearby areas where the
legendary kurinji flowers have bloomed gregariously.
Accordingly, heavy vehicles carrying tourists will not be allowed to
ply on the road to Eravikulam National Park from August 19, 2006. They
will have to park at places specified by the revenue authorities in the
town. The KSRTC will operate buses to take the tourists and nature
lovers to the Park entrance at Rajamalai. The Park has vehicles to take
the visitors to the tourist area inside the Park.
The restrictions will be in force during the flowering season of
kurinji at the Park and nearby areas. They may be relaxed or
intensified depending on the flow of tourists.
The Department will be taking measures against destruction of the
kurinji plant by visitors including imposition of fines. A campaign to
create awareness among the people about the need to conserve the
kurinji and other flora of the shola grasslands is also underway.
