Roy Thomas leaves Kurinjimala Sanctuary on new assignment

MUNNAR, June 19: A. P. Sunil Babu, who was Wildlife Warden at Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary, is the new Wildlife Warden of the Kurinjimala Sanctuary and Eravikulam National Park, Munnar.

Mr. Babu replaces Roy P. Thomas who has been transferred as Divisional Forest Officer of Kannur Territorial Division. Roy Thomas had served at Munnar for more than three and a half years.

Mr. Thomas has been instrumental in formation of the Kurinjimala Sanctuary and its initial protection, especially from fire after the blooming season of kurinji in 2006. He had also led the elimination of ganja plantations from the Kambakallu-Kadavari area before the formation of the Sanctuary.

Eravikulam National Park could acquire six mini buses and manage the tourist traffic inside the Park during the Kurinji season, which attracted nearly five lakh visitors to the Park in 2006-07. Besides, the Anamala Forest Development Agency could raise a fund of Rs. 10 lakhs.

Mr. Thomas has coauthored a Manual of Forest Laws in Kerala with advocate George Johnson. Both Mr. Thomas and Mr. Sunil Babu are officer bearers of Kerala forest officers association.
