Convention of environmental activists pitch for Western Ghats

THRISSUR, August 23:
The convention of environmental activists and organisations, convened by the Coordination Committee for Protection of Western Ghats in Thrissur, has called for nationalisation of all quarry, crusher and M Sand units in Kerala.

A resolution, moved by Committee chairman John Peruvanthanam, said that this could be done under the Panchayat Raj Act. Units operating in violation of the laws should be closed down.
The Convention also called for protection of the remaining forests of Western Ghats. This, it stressed, was needed to prevent changes in climate and food security.

Another resolution urged the government to abandon the Vizhinjam Project to avoid damage to the Ghats (through operation of quarries for building the port) and the coast. The Athirappally project too should be dropped to protect the waterfall and biodiversity of the region.

Dr. S. Sankar, scientist, Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi, inaugurated the Convention. Dr. T. V. Sajeev, scientist, KFRI; Dr. Shaju Thomas, retired lecturer, Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, and Sunny George, Director ,SCMS Water Management Institute, gave lectures at a study camp organised in connection with the Convention.
