Karuva Island opens for tourism

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has reopened the Karuva Island in Wayand district for tourism.

The tourist traffic to the island has been closed for five months owing to monsoon and lack of amenities including bamboo rafts to transfer tourists to the island.

The locale consists of 64 islets spread over 1.47 square kilometers formed by river sediments at the confluence of Mananthavady River and Panamaram River, tributaries of Kabani River.

The Island under Forest Department has natural vegetation characteristic of the Nilgiri Biosphere and more or less evolved from swamp to natural forest with some interesting flora and fauna.

The Forest Department and Karuva Destination Management Council operates tourist facilities in the area. Around 2.5 lakh tourists visit the island every year.
