KurinjiCall for Palani hills National Park

TRIVANDRUM: Environmental groups are pressing Tamil Nadu to declare a protected area adjoining the Kurinjimala Sanctuary formed by the Kerala Government near Munnar.

The Nature Lovers’ Club at the Secretariat here, GREENS (Group Endevour for Environment and Nature Sustenance), has submitted a memorandum to the Tamil Nadu Minister of Forests urging the State to protect the kurinji habitat at Palani hills. The Palni Hills Conservation  The Save Kurinji Campaign Council has urged the Kerala Forest Minister to take up the issue with Tamil Nadu.

It is pointed out that the major beneficiary of the Kurinjimala sanctuary is the Tamil Nadu as most streams from these areas flow into that State. Conservation of the sholas and grasslands in these areas would ensure perennial flow of water into Tamil Nadu. (Shola grasslands hold large amounts of runoff from rain and release them gradually through the streams originating from the sholas). So, Tami Nadu should reciprocate by declaring the proposed Palani Hills National Park, they say.
