Forest Department seeds knoll at Munnar
knoll
MUNNAR, July 8, 2007: The Forest Department has seeded the knoll behind the mosque at Munnar with neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana).

Environmental activists and volunteers joined the effort led by an Assistant Wildlife Warden last week. It is the first time that neelakurinji is planted in a organised way. (The plant had been produced successfully by tissue culture at Kodaikanal).

The seeds were collected during the last season (2006) from flowering areas near Munnar. It is expected that the knoll would be covered with kurinji flowers in the next season (2018).

Though Munnar is known for kurinji flowers, the nearest flowering area last season was 15 km away at Eravikulam National Park. If the planting is successful, tourists will be able to view the plants right from the town.
