kurinji blooms again at Pooppara in Idukki district
Kurinji bloom
MUNNAR, September 2, 2020: Kurinj has bloomed again on a hillside near Pooppara close to the Kochi-Dhanushkodi national highway in Idukki district of Kerala.

These are the next generation of a group of plants that had flowered 12 years ago in 2008 in the same area.

The flowers differ in size from those that have bloomed at in Eravikulam National Park, Kurinjimala Sanctuary and other places in 2018. Botanist Jomy Augustine says that the plants are neelakurinji, scientifically known as Stroblanthus kunthianus (kunthiana), itself.  A similar group of plants had bloomed at Anakkaramedu a month ago.

Though kurinji blooms only once in 12 years, groups of kurinji plants in different locations bloom in different years. The most massive of this had taken place in Eravikulam National Park, Kurinjimala Sanctuary and other places in 2018. An earlier flowering had taken place near Munnar and Lockhart gap in 2014. A repeat this may take place in 2026 if the habitat remains undisturbed.
