Varieties of kurinji bloom at Eravikulam National Park

MUNNAR, September 22:

Several varieties of kurinji (genus: Strobilanthes) have bloomed in the Eravikulam National Park near Munnar this month.

They include a species that can grow almost to the size of a tree (Marakurinji) and a rose variety of kurinji. Some of these species have a flowering cycle of eight years and mostly grow on the edges of shola forests. They vary in size and shape.

The plants occur only in small numbers at the park and do not exhibit gregarious flowering. One variety has white petals and the flowers are not conical or bell-like.

Stray flowering of Strobilanthes kunthiana has also been noticed at the Park this month.
