Ban on use of thotti for controlling elephants

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 25:
Forest Department has imposed a ban on using iron ankush (thotti) to control domesticated elephants.

This is in view of direction from the Inspector General of Forests (Project Elephant) following an order from the High Court of Rajasthan.
Wooden ankush is permitted to be used to control elephants, if required.

Kerala Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) G. Harikumar has directed officers concerned to create awareness among staff and people about the ban and take stringent action in case of violation of the ban.

The measure is aimed at preventing cruelty on captive elephants.
