Kurinji flowering season begins
Kurinji-Kodai
Kodaikanal, July 19, 2018. Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) has bloomed en masse at Kodaikanal (Tamil Nadu) and neighbouring areas. Flowerings have also been reported from the Kurinjimala Sanctuary in Idukki district of Kerala.

Kurinji has flowered in Kodaikanal town and other parts of the Palaini hills. The flowering is almost over in places such as Vasappattikudi, Koodallarkudi and Swamiaralakudi.

The Kerala Forest Department is not allowing visitors into the Kurinjimala Sanctuary against the background of controversy over encroachments in the Sanctuary and indecision over settlement of boundaries. Large scale flowering is expected to take place in the Sanctuary.

Flowering is yet to begin in the Eravikulam National Park near Munnar expect for stray flowerings.

Kerala Government is making elaborate arrangements to address the tourist inflow expected when kurinji flowers at Eravikulam National Park. Visitors will be admitted to the Rajamala area of the Park. About 2750 visitors will be allowed into the park on a day.

The Tourism Department is expecting about 8 lakh visitors to converge on Munnar during the flowering season. Most of the hotels in Munnar are already booked. Late comers may not be able to get entry into the Park.

The season will last about three months.
