NEW DELHI: Member of Parliament and former Kerala Minister for Forests Binoy Viswam released the book-- kurinji, the flower of the blue mountains, by mailing a copy to the sole library in the tribal village of Edamalakudi, in a remote part of Idukki district of Kerala, from Ajoy Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday.

The book, written by Roy Mathew, former Deputy Editor of The Hindu daily, is all about kurinji, the flower that blooms once in 12 years in Munnar and some other parts of the Western Ghats, its variants and habitat. The flower has strong associations with the lives of Muthuva tribe in Munnar in Kerala and a few other tribes in Tamil Nadu.

The Muthava village of Edamalakkudy is a cluster of 26 hamlets scattered in an area of 106 square kilometres. The sole libary in the area was established by a tea vendor P. V. Chinnathampi belonging to the tribe at Iruppukallakudi in the village which is nearly 40 km from Munnar. The book will be adding to a collection of more than 150 books in the library.

Mr. Viswam was the Forest Minister of Kerala when the Kurinjimala Sanctuary was declared 12 years ago to protect the kurinji flower and its habitat. He took keen interest in protecting the kurinji hills.
