Population of Tahrs go up in Eravikulam National Park

The population of Nilgiri tahr (Ibex) has gone up by 50 at the Eravikulam National Park during the breeding season this summer.

Last year also, the population of the Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) had gone up by around 60 to reach 871. However, this figure is lower than the population in the nineties. It is not likely that all the 50 plus kids born this year would survive.

The Park, which was closed for the breeding season from February was reopened last week. Heavy rush of visitors was reported from the Park, but sightings of the kids were few.

Vaiable population of Tahrs exist outside the National Park also. The State had a total Tahr population of about 1300 in the nineties.

(Note: the report has been revised as highlighted to correct errors. A fresh survey of the population of Tahrs is planned this year. There have been differing claims on Tahr population in the past.)
